Awards Information
The Awards Scheme has three achievement levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Each level includes a set of actions to be completed that connect to the overall TravelWise goal of reducing car trips to school across the Auckland region by 9% over a 10-year period. This reduction will be achieved by increasing levels of walking, cycling, scootering, school bus/public transport usage and car pooling to school.

BRONZE PHASE
The aim of the first four terms of the TravelWise programme is to understand the barriers to the use of sustainable transport modes and to develop a School Travel Plan. This Travel Plan includes engineering, education, encouragement and enforcement strategies to overcome these barriers and support the use of safe and sustainable ways of getting to and from school.

SILVER PHASE
The aim of the four terms following the launch is to implement the School Travel Plan and meet the Silver Award criteria. This phase involves actively encouraging and educating the whole school community about sustainable transport choices. The supporting frameworks are put in place, including the implementation of engineering strategies (road safety improvements) by the local Council. Annual monitoring surveys are carried out to determine if the actions taken to encourage the use of sustainable transport modes have been effective.

A move up to the Gold level will be achieved when the school reaches the targeted reduction in car trips to school (currently 4%).
GOLD PHASE
Becoming a Gold school means maintaining or improving on the reduction in car trips to school, and the supportive frameworks and road safety benefits that have been established at least to the level of activity defined in the Silver Award criteria.
Gold schools will be publically recognized for achieving a reduction of 4% or more in the number of car trips to school and creating a real difference to traffic congestion, road safety and the well-being of their students, communities, and the environment.
