Road Safety
Road safety and personal safety are key factors people weigh up in choosing how to travel. Yet when people choose to travel by car because of a real or perceived safety benefit, they increase the risk for other road users.
The main causes of road trauma in Auckland are:

Speeding
 Drink driving
 Crashes at intersections
Pedestrians and cyclists struck by vehicles
 School Safety
The TravelWise Schools programme works with local councils and RoadSafe Auckland to create safer travelling environment for children who walk and cycle, including:
 Parking restrictions around school gates
 Putting in safer pedestrian crossings
Safety audits on walking school bus routes
Health and safety training for walking school bus volunteers
Promoting safety and safe crossings around rail way lines
Bike Buddy programmes at school to encourage safe cycling
Road signs highlighting caution around schools

Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety
Check out safety tips for walking and cycling.

There are some measures you can do to make your travel safer.
 If you are driving:
Slow down – there’s no such thing as safe speeding
Drive sober, and don’t let friends or family drive drunk
Watch out for other road users
